RUSSIAN PRESSURE ON ALL FRONTS

RUSSIAN TROOPS are once again on the move driving the Ukrainians out of their front-line positions on all fronts, including central Donbas and the south. One Russian official told the media that the southern push was a “pre-emptive attack” to wrong-foot a Ukrainian offensive and divert troops away from the fighting for control of the strategic Donbas town of Bakhmut. Whether this is the prelude to the Russians’ long-expected winter offensive or simply a drive to strengthen their own defences will become clear in the next few weeks.

The strike wave

NEXT WEDNESDAY promises to see at least half a million workers, from train drivers, civil servants and university staff, taking strike action. Amongst them will be 300,000 teachers belonging to the National Education Union (NEU), who will be laying down the chalk at 23,400 schools in England and Wales and in sixth form colleges. They will be joined by their colleagues in the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) in two council areas and 70,000 members of the University and College Union (UCU), in the education sector alone.
